Who We Are
The British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP), formerly known as BASP (British Association of Stroke Physicians), was founded in 1999 with the overarching goal of promoting stroke medicine within Great Britain.
In parallel to the major developments and improvements in the care of people with stroke or at risk of stroke over the past decades, BIASP evolved into an organisation that has provided leadership in advancing clinical standards, promoting research and improving training across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
BIASP is run by its executive committee and subcommittees consisting of members who are stroke physicians with a dedication to advancing stroke medicine across all aspects of the specialty. They are elected by the BIASP membership and meet regularly to ensure progress is made towards achieving BIASP’s strategic objectives.
BASP to BIASP
BASP was re-launched as the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians on 2 December 2021. The change to recognise members from the Republic of Ireland was introduced following consultation with the wider BASP membership.
BIASP members have contributed to the establishment of stroke medicine as a sub-speciality, and to the development of evidence-based services throughout the UK: these include TIA clinics, hyper-acute stroke care, stroke units and early supported discharge. New research evidence, new approaches to the training of stroke physicians and service provision, will continue to influence how stroke services develop. BIASP is a key coalition partner in the UK Stroke forum, the largest inter-disciplinary stroke meeting in the UK.
