BIASP’s strategic objectives on scientific research:

Our Objectives

Our objectives are supported by the work of the BIASP scientific committee. The BIASP scientific committee undertakes and promotes the following activities and opportunities:

BIASP’s Role at the UK Stroke Forum

Input to the scientific programme of the annual UK Stroke Forum conference. BIASP is one of the coalition of over 30 organisations that comprise the UK Stroke Forum (UKSF). The BIASP scientific committee is represented by its chairperson on the programme committee that plans the annual UKSF. Members of the committee help plan the topics and speakers for sessions at the conference.  For more information CLICK HERE.

The Local Clinical Research Investigator Award by the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP) acknowledges and rewards the exceptional contributions made by stroke physicians in stroke research.
This award aims to recognise the value of grassroots research efforts and encourage the continued involvement of local practitioners in advancing the knowledge and treatment of stroke.

Candidates must be consultant physicians, including locum and specialist doctors who are the Principal Investigators (PIs) in any stroke-related research project.

BIASP Warlow Prize

Members of the committee adjudicate the BIASP Warlow Prize, which is presented to the best abstract presentation by a BIASP member who is a medical trainee or consultant of three years standing at the UK Stroke Forum conference. The adjudication uses a scoring sheet that carries forward the score from the submitted abstract, together with additional scores on scientific content, scientific relevance, overall presentation, and the ability to handle questions. The winner of the BASP Warlow Prize is awarded a certificate and receives support to attend the annual conference of the European Stroke Conference  in order to present their prize-winning research.

Awarded at UKSF Conference.

BIASP Writing Group Applications

The British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP) and the NIHR RDN Stroke are jointly issuing a call to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals for writing groups to support portfolio development across the stroke pathway. Up to £1,000 per writing group is available. The funding is based on the likelihood that some virtual meetings are likely to continue, and to support BIASP’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Nonetheless, it is acknowledged that face-to-face meetings may be needed, and that support for patient, carer and public involvement and administrative support will still be required.

It is anticipated that up to 4 applications will be funded, following peer review by representatives of the BIASP Scientific Committee and the NIHR Stroke National Specialty Group.

NIHR Associate PI Scheme

The Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme aims to develop junior doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to become the PIs of the future and provides formal recognition of a trainee’s engagement in NIHR Portfolio research studies through the conferment of Associate PI status endorsed by the NIHR and the medical Royal Colleges.

James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership for Stroke

The Stroke Priority Setting Partnership worked with over 1,400 people affected by stroke and care professionals to establish priority areas for research across the stroke care pathway.

Researchers may be able to apply for funding from the Health Technology Assessment Programme to address priority areas identified in the Stroke PSP.
