Stroke Association
Key activities:
Funds research, as well as fellowships and lectureships, to improve treatment, care and rehabilitation.
Delivers services – through our Helpline, commissioned stroke support services in local areas, as well as through developing My Stroke Guide and new services during the pandemic such as Stroke Association Connect and Here for You
Produces health guides, advice and information
Campaigns and influences policy to improve care and support for stroke survivors
Has a UK-wide network of clubs and groups
British Heart Foundation
Main Activities
Largest independent funder of CVD research - £99.7m in 2019/20
Involved in implementation and oversight of NHS Long Term Plan – CVD delivery board co-chairs
Influence policy and decision making
Involved in local delivery through Healthcare Innovation arm
Provide health information and support online and via telephone
Different Strokes
Main activities
Local groups – 40 groups with 900 members, providing support, exercise classes and information
Information and support – via telephone and email, provided support to 1,000 callers in 2018
Online support groups – include 4,500 member strong Facebook community
Family support – including resources for young children whose parents have had a stroke
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland
Main activities
Advice Line and patient information (including Scot Gov-supported Tailored Talks - personalised digital info for patients available nationally in next few months)
Nursing and other support services in the community – stroke liaison nurses in 4 (of 14) Health Boards, community support (including aphasia) services in 7, peer support in all 14.
Education and training activities (including thrombectomy training for stroke nurses)
Campaigning to Government, NHS, other agencies
Chest Heart & Stroke Northern Ireland
Main activities
Care & support (support services for people affected by chest, heart or stroke conditions, including carers)
Prevention (including health checks, provision of health promotion info, online health and homeless service, online talks & workshops for children & young people in schools)
Research (fund research in local unis & hospitals)
Campaigning (campaign & lobby local representatives & government to make improvements in care & treatment of chest, heart & stroke illnesses)
Irish Heart Foundation
Main activities
Patient support (31 support groups across the country, including 21 for stroke)
Prevention (frontline services & programmes in schools, workplaces & communities that support people to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke)
Advocacy (advocate & campaign to influence national health policy including in areas of childhood obesity, stroke, tobacco control & the provision of high quality, effective cardiac services)
Lifesaving CPR (run the largest CPR training network in ROI)
